End Engine Valve tap and Oil Burning with New Products

All motors have several kinds of valves in the engine and transmission. In your engine, the valves that cause the tap sound are those that open letting fuel and exhaust in and out of the motors pistons.

Intake and exhaust valves open by cam lobe as the piston is going downard. This downard action creates a suction of sorts. That suction draws the fuel charge into the cylinder area pass the valve opening. The intake valve then closes as the piston compresses the fuel for combustion.

After combustion, which pushes the piston down to power your car forward, the piston goes back up and the exhaust valve opens, permitting the combustion exhaust to be pushed out the tale pipe.

Normally, your motors valves are forced open by a cam. "Valve springs" cause the valves to close quietly, along with the help on an intermediate part called a hydraulic lifter.

Several dirty, sticky, and friction-binding factors cause the intake and exhaust valves to eventually tap as any of those negative conditions jam the valve stem. This binding restricks or hinders the rapid closing of the valve.

The tap occurs under those slower valve closing conditions which creates a space. As the cam swings around every second that space allows the cam to slap the valve stem with a hammer-like blow and the tap tap tap sound occurs.

Dirty "valve lifters" also cause valve tap; there is one lifter for each valve. Inside each lifter is a pencil-sized piston which your motors oil pressure pushes against, to make constant contact with the valve stem.

Any one of several dirty motor oiling restrictions will stop oil flow to this little hydraulic piston. The piston, lacking pressure against it will settle down into its bore and a space opens up, which also cause the same tap tap tap sound.
